Everybody Has a Librarian Inside

What does a librarian do? "A Librarian is a person who develops procedures for organizing information and provides services which assist and instruct people in the most efficient and effective ways to identify, locate, access, and use information and resources (articles, books, magazines, etc.)".

Well - a librarian is most concerned with selecting and organizing information. But that is exactly what everybody in doing on web in a phenomenon called Folksonomy. A "folksonomy" is a collaboratively generated, open-ended labeling system that enables Internet users to categorize content such as Web pages, online photographs, and Web links. This is because everybody has a small Librarian embedded inside.

Google releases a free software called SketchUp.

"With just a few simple tools, you can create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects - even space ships. And once you've built your models, you can place them in Google Earth, post them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies".

Library Access to Scholarship - Cites & Insights

I was going through a section of Cites & Insights 6, Number 7: May 2006 entitled Library Access to Scholarship . Apart from other things it highlights:

--OA Librarian, Open Access resources for librarians

--The impact of open access on library and information science (a research project). It’s a project proposal from Cheryl Knott Malone and Anita Coleman (both at the University of Arizona’s School of Information Resources and Library Science).

--College & Research Libraries will be freely available after a six-month embargo

--A group of librarians, college administrators, and scholars issued a call to action to preserve online scholarly journals, noting that such journals “could vanish into oblivion should publishers go out of business or face other calamities.”

--On April 10, the Public Access Working Group (an advisory panel to NIH) reaffirmed its support for strengthening of the NIH public access policy, calling for the policy to be mandatory and for the maximum embargo to be six months.

Internet Use by Researchers: a Study of Panjab University, Chandigarh

Preeti Mahajan of Panjab University conducted a survey to find the Internet use by researchers at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

She found differences within various subject domains. Researchers in the sciences were the most positive about the impact of the Internet. While 70% of the social science and only 20% of the humanities felt positive about the Internet and its impact.

Does this reflect  universality of Sciences and Local nature of Humanities?

Librarians' Duties: - BLOGS, WIKIs, WEBCASTS / PODCASTS, IM, RSS and WEB

What would be the duties of Next Generation Librarians?

Definitely it would include the following:

--Distribution of content via digital tools such as blogs and wikis for the library system website.

--Develop and deliver library instruction through podcasts and multimedia webcasts.

--Promote community via new technologies within the library and virtually via IM and other emerging communication mechanisms.

--Enhance Library's web presence with current content and methods for distribution such as RSS.

--Investigate and implement new technologies that may enhance the Library System's web presence.

New Features in Scholar Google

In the Official Google Blog: Keeping up with recent research post highlights a new feature introduced by Scholar Google that will sort results according to "Recent Articles". According to another post now it would be possible to download citations [individual results] in EndNote / RefWorks / Refman and BibTex formats. One need to go to preferences and set a format.

These features are in right direction. However it would be better to have features like:

- Able to restrict set by "citated by" to give only those results that have been cited atleast N times.

- Able to download in various formats in batches rather than just single items.

- Able to download the results set in Spread Sheet formats.

The European Commission has released its long-awaited report, Study on the Economic and Technical Evolution of the Scientific Publication Markets in Europe.

"The study confirms scientific journals as an essential channel for the dissemination of scientific knowledge. With large amounts of public money invested in research, it becomes increasingly important for publications reporting on that research to be accessible to as wide a public as possible.

The study therefore makes a number of recommendations for future action, including:

* Guaranteed public access to publicly-funded research, at the time of publication and also long-term
* A “level-playing field” so that different business models in publishing can compete fairly in the market
* Ranking scientific journals by quality, defined more widely than pure scientific excellence, but also taking into account factors such as management of copyright, search facilities and archiving
* Developing pricing strategies that promote competition in the journal market
* Scrutinising major mergers that may take place in this sector in the future
* Promoting the development of electronic publication, for example by eliminating unfavourable tax treatment of electronic publications and encouraging public funding and public-private partnerships to create digital archives in areas with little commercial investment."..
